The banks intend to require shipowners to provide detailed information on crew welfare practices before securing loans, with non-compliance potentially resulting in restricted financing or higher interest rates. This initiative aligns with the Poseidon Principles, which aim to promote environmental sustainability in shipping.

These seafarers often face harsh conditions, including unpaid wages and confinement on vessels without adequate provisions. The issue is particularly prevalent in the Middle East, where many ships are registered under flags of convenience, complicating legal recourse. Organizations like the International Transport Workers' Federation are working to address these abuses, but many seafarers continue to endure prolonged hardships
